Schema/Background Knowledge

Schema
...is simply all of the information that we have in our brains. Often it is resembled as a filing cabinet in the brain where you have many different files that organize new information into your head so that it relates to information you already know. If you have no prior experience with the new information that you are receiving, often a new 'file' is created.

Schema is also referred to as background knowledge: experiences that you have had, things you have felt, places you have been, and so on. It is any information that you have interacted with previously that is then stored into your brain in a manner that allows you to find the information when you think about a certain topic.

Schema is something that helps readers and learners make connections between their own experiences and what they are reading/learning.
